How EMDR Works

A brief overview of the process.

1

History

EMDR was developed by Francine Shapiro in the 1980s. She discovered that eye movements can have a desensitizing effect on disturbing thoughts.

2

The Eight Phases

EMDR therapy involves eight phases of treatment. Bilateral stimulation is used in phases 3-6 to help the brain process traumatic memories.

3

Bilateral Stimulation

The use of bilateral stimulation (eye movements, sounds, or taps) is thought to mimic the brain's natural processing that occurs during REM sleep.
